The thing with old music is it's already had that filter you allude to. There was a lot of disposable crap in the old days too.People make the mistake of forgetting about that. Some of the stuff being made now will be timeless too and someone in the future will write exactly what you did about today's music. Also, you do realize that some of the most celebrated oldies stuff from the likes of Motown was also very mass produced right? That doesn't necessarily mean it can't produce some gems. It's very easy to come up with absolutes when it comes to any art. "I hate all country" "Autotune is bad". But the reality is it's not these genres and effects that make art bad. They might raise the probability that you won't care for it but even if you hate country music, there might be a song or two you enjoy.

Yup nothing like comparing a selection of some of recent history's best vocalists to what disposable singers of today are doing. That seems fair.I'm sorry but Neko, love her or hate her, comes off as a pretentious twat in this interview.

Neko's voice is second to none. She is a true talent here on Earth in our time.

I think many artists are cashing in on the auto-tune sound as a fad...I mean, everyone's doing it, right? Some need to, some don't. Its just what's happening right now.

I don't use it in my recordings. I actually prefer the "not razor sharp" production feel in my natural timbres. The subtleties of the throat as an instrument are practically obliterated in studios around the world. Too bad. Everyone just ends up sounding the same.

Love you Neko.

Yeah I'm watching her on Austin City Limits right now, a repeat broadcast. I'm not familiar with her and I was just channel surfing, and I heard her hit a tricky note and hold it really well, and I stopped changing the channel. By the time the song ended I was Googling her because I was amazed by her vocal control. And this Pitchfork interview came up. Interesting. I've never heard of auto tune, but I guess I hear the results of it on the radio if so many pop artists are using it. Weird.
